Sometimes a new client is referred to me, and they say: “Todd, we’d like to commission you for copywriting, but we’ll use our own designer.” It makes me think of this clip from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid...
During his interview, the Sundance Kid asks, “Can I move?” And only when he’s allowed to do his full fluid thing can he shoot the center out of the target on the ground across the way.
Most marketing creative is done by a separate copywriter plus a designer, but I’m unique in that I am a copywriter and also a serious designer. (I began my career on Madison Avenue as an art director who also always wrote copy.)
Oftentimes my design work is beautifully unnoticeable, and my copywriting is strategically understated. When I’m set free to do my own synergistic and tactical thing, I win lucrative control after control for delighted clients.
My best vendor colleagues also tend to have their own way of doing things, so I give them what they need to get started, and then I try to stay out of the way.
